"James Inflames is a master craftsman and it’s an EP he and his collaborators should be rightfully proud of."
Mutability review - Louder Than War

Mutability is the experimental debut EP from James Inflames and is a collection of some of his personal, solo material, with stories that end in unexpected places. Each song features guest musicians from the troupe of phenomenally talented people that are

The songs

The songs were written over a few years. Beau was orginally a guitar song I wrote in a day, on holiday in Devon in 2014

A Million Satellites was a slow burner. It had a previous life as a old school house tune, about the rave scene in 90's Manchester, but when I played it a few years later, the disco diva in me took flight! The addition of Jenni's vocals, A M Davis's guitar and Brandon's groovy bass have brought it to life. Paul's production on it is amazing!

Sail Away was something that just happened when I was jamming one night. Most of it came out in one hit, and it's hardly changed. Beautifully sung by Paul, I love the swell choruses.

Mountain Clouds is the most personal song on here. The song is about perspective, realisation and change and tells the story of one of those moments of mine. It's development has been ongoing for a few years now, but finally I hear in my ears what I originally heard in my head, and more. Emily's supporting vocals transformed the song and Pauls spacey production is perfect! It would not have existed but for my healthy obsession with Kim Deal's Walking With A Killer,  possibly the best song ever made...

My Dog Beau
A road trip song for guitar and bass with an orchestral burst half way through the song, and again at the end. A chilled, relaxed vibe with some surprises.

Production reference tracks:
Young Folks, Peter, Bjorn and John
Aurora, Björk

A Million Satellites
A disco driven pop song - a truly awesome vocal from Jenni Casey, 80's synths, gorgeous Hawaiian lead guitar lines from A M Davis and Brandon Otto's punchy bass just pumps the song along to its epic end! What more could a song have?

Production reference tracks:
Walking With A Killer, Kim Deal
Headphones, Björk
Crazy In Love, Beyoncé -ft. JAY Z
Ocean Drive, Lighthouse Family

Sail Away

A country-pop song about a guy stuck in a dead end town, dreaming of falling in love and sailing off into the sunset. Paul Kenward sings the vocal and harmonies so beautifully, bringing the character to life.

Production reference tracks:
Harvest Moon, Neil Young

My Tennessee Mountain Home, Dolly Parton

Mountain Clouds
A laid back, chilled song with ethereal sounds accompanying the vocals and bursts of distorted guitars. Emily Mongan adds heavenly voices which just adds so much beauty to the music.

Production reference tracks:
Walking With A Killer, Kim Deal
Memories Of Green, Vangelis
Deep Blue Day, Brian Eno

TNPP

The New Physics Phenomenon

"Every musician needs TNPP in their lives - this couldn't have happened without them! I am so very lucky to know this beautiful gaggle of weirdos, and luckier still that they wanted to be part of this. It is amazing because of them."

Definitely not a band, this fluid, collective of highly skilled musicians, writers, voalists, lyricists, producers, artists, photographers, videographers, cooks, pet sitters (basically everything a strapped, jobbing musician could need), are more of a cooperative - guesting on each others (and others) projects, involvement depending on the needs of each project.

The initial incarnation of James Inflames and TNPP occurred in 2017. From that sprang The Lantern Parade - anything is possible with TNPP around.

For Mutability, The New Physics Phenomenon are:

Jenni 'Chaos' Casey

"Jen & I recorded a Drum n Bass tune years ago and her attitude was exactly what A Million Satellites needed. She bloody nailed it - I can't imagine anyone else singing it ."

There isn't a Southampton venue, gig or event that Jenni hasn't played at... More comfortable delivering harder, punky songs, A Million Satellites was something of a deviation which she grabbed and duly smashed!

A M Davis

"...he's a bit like Midas - everything he plays on turns to magic!"

One day A M Davis will reside in the annuls of local folklore! A mainstay of the Southampton music scene, he has been playing here for years, with bands, duos and solo. For Mutability, he added gorgeous bluesy guitar licks to My Dog Beau, and the hip swinging, finger clicking Hawaiian lead solo on A Million Satellites.

He regularly astounds the crowds with his crazy lead solos when playing with...The Lantern Parade and is now working on his live solo material, due to be recorded with Paul over the summer.

Brandon Otto

"Brandon's the King of the groovy bass line, no one else could have made A Million Satellites roll like that!"

You'll probably meet Brandon lurking at gigs with a camera or two, as photography is his finest craft, but he sure pumps along some bouncy bass on his sassy five string for A Million Satellites. It'll be no surprise that he also makes grooves and bass for The Lantern Parade !

Paul Kenward

"...yeah, he's been a bit of a hero!"

Paul's contribution to this EP project is immeasurable. He has solely recorded, mixed and produced Mutability (his third EP) and he delivers his best velvet, crooning vocals to Sail Away and backing vocals on My Dog Beau and A Million Satellites. More renowned for his epic performances with The Lantern Parade, he has also produced their debut EP... AND... has just gained a First Class Honours degree in popular music production at Solent University.

Emily mongan

"I just said 'Can  you throw some 'la la la's' over Mountain Clouds if that's ok?' Half an hour later Emily emerged. A couple of hours later I heard the results. I'm sure you'll agree, she has made Heaven happen, exactly how and when it needed to!"

James and Emily have spent years working towards a collaboration, finally realised with Vanitasse, their dark, gothic venture. Emily currently shares centre stage with Paul as Co-lead for The Lantern Parade!
